TikTok is a popular social platform for funny videos, trending dances, DIY hacks, and much more. Soda alternatives are the latest trend. Soda is very harmful to your dental health, but some of the alternative beverages recommended online can be just as bad, if not worse. If you’re considering joining the soda swap trend, here’s what you need to know to safeguard your pearly whites.
Soda and Dental Health
You know soda isn’t good for your waistline, but it’s also bad news for your smile. Your teeth are protected by your enamel, which is the hardest substance in your body. Unfortunately, it isn’t any match for soda because it contains sugar and it’s acidic. Consuming a lot of soda will erode your enamel slowly, increasing your risk of tooth decay.
To protect against cavities and promote a slimmer waistline, TikTok users are turning to alternative beverages. Some people are adding balsamic vinegar to water for more flavor. Although balsamic vinegar is great on salads, it is also acidic. It can weaken your enamel over time. While your enamel is strong, it can’t grow back. Once it is gone, you have lost it for good.
Besides an increased risk of decay, your teeth can also change color. As your enamel gets thinner, more of your yellowish dentin will be visible. Your teeth can look aged and discolored. Thin enamel also increases your risk of tooth sensitivity, which can make it difficult to enjoy hot or cold foods and drinks.
Protect Your Teeth from Sugar
Healthcare and dental professionals recommend drinking water whenever possible, especially from the tap. Fluoride is added to many public water systems because it strengthens enamel naturally, making it more resistant to decay. It also cleanses your teeth in between brushing and flossing and keeps your mouth moist to combat bacteria.
If you can’t resist soda, juice, or another sugary beverage, the American Dental Association recommends following a few tips:
- Limit your consumption of sugary or acidic beverages.
- Drink through a straw to limit its contact with your teeth.
- Don’t sip or swish the beverage in your mouth.
- Drink it all at once instead of sipping it.
- Wait at least an hour before brushing your teeth because your enamel can be temporarily weakened.
- Rinse your mouth with water or drink a glass of milk after you’ve finished.
- Eat a piece of cheese or chew sugarless gum to encourage saliva production if you can’t get to your toothbrush.
You can find a lot of great information on TikTok and other social media platforms, but always ask a dental professional before trying any hack or challenge that involves your oral health.
